Paracorder 667 is Great for EVP's
EVP, or electronic voice phenomenon, are some of the best evidence for
the existence of paranormal activity. By definition, an EVP is a
disembodied voice which is not physically heard at the time
of recording, but later heard upon playback. They are typically graded
via
an A, B, C rating system, with A being the clearest and most
likely of being paranormal. At times, a disembodied voice may be
physically
heard and also picked up by the recording device. These,
along with other unexplained sounds, we refer to as audio anomalies.
Paranormalistics HQ is located in Carlsbad Ca North San Diego County. We
primarily service California and Nevada, but will travel as far as it
takes. We now have a Paranormalistics Las Vegas Nv Chapter and

'Montauk Monster' washes ashore in New York
Cryptozoology News (Montauk Monster)
The creature was spotted under the Brooklyn Bridge by Denise Ginley, who sent photos of it to New York-based news website Gothamist on July 22.
Ms Ginley said the animal was about 60cm long from head to tail and asked: "Is this another incarnation of the Montauk Monster, or just the biggest rat in the city?" Photos of the carcass, which Ms Ginley dubbed the "East River Monster", quickly spread throughout US media, with people suggesting it was a washed up rat until the New York City Parks Department claimed it was a pig. But this was quickly disputed, with people pointing out the photos showed the creature had claws and not trotters like a pig. Ms Ginley told ninemsn she was walking to a farmers' market with her boyfriend when she first spotted the carcass and she returned later that day with her camera to photograph it.
"Several other people were looking and taking photos, and everyone had a different opinion about what it was (suggestions included giant rat, dog, pig, monster, and seal)," Ms Ginley said.
"Obviously I thought it was gross, but it was just so strange looking I wanted to get closer ... strangely enough, it did not smell, maybe because it had been in the water so long."
The carcass has still not been identified, and Gawker jokingly reported that the New York City Parks Department was "still being cagey" about the animal.
Another unidentifiable animal, the Montauk Monster made headlines in July 2008 when it washed up on a beach in Montauk, northeast of New York.
At the time people suggested the creature was a raccoon, a small dog, a rat and even a bloated turtle without its shell.

Haunted Oceanside CA
The Haunted Hunter Steakhouse in Oceanside CA
This is one of Oceansides most haunted locations. Prior to the restaurant being built, the land was once
Oceanside's Buena Vista Cemetery. The first known burial was in 1885 and
the last known was in 1906. It's not known why burials stopped at Buena
Vista; some people disinterred and moved their loved ones' bodies to
the nearby Oceanside Cemetery.
The land the cemetery was on was purchased by a
schoolteacher in the 1950s. She wanted to preserve the view of Buena
Vista Lagoon from her home located on Stewart Street. The land was later
purchased by a developer who wanted to use the site for commercial
properties. In January 1970, 17 bodies were disinterred and removed to
El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley while others went to other
resting places.
During the grading of the site for use, and during the creation of the
ramp for the I-5 freeway, construction workers found human remains and
coffins. These discoveries were swept under the rug by developers so the
workers took it upon themselves to rebury any remains they found on the
site.
Ghosts of the Hunter SteakhouseThe Hunter Steakhouse sits on a hill above the Buena Vista Lagoon. Patrons and employees have constantly reported incidents. The stairwell to the bar area appears to be the home of a female spirit. There is a storage room above the lower dining area and entrance. The room is constantly locked and hardly used. But for some reason the spirits prefer this location when the restaurant gets busy. There are three windows up there, and although they can`t be opened, people feel drawn to gaze at these windows. Also from the second floor an apparition has been reported moving across the room from the fireplace in midair. Several people have heard there names called by both male and female voices. Like many other locations of hauntings, objects moving and power surges have been reported as well. The submitter of this haunted places reports seeing a face of a male form out of the chimney, ever so briefly, but it felt welcoming.
Paranormal Activity has also been reported at the nearby Amazon Bike
Shop. The building was formerly a gas station and strange incidents were
reported during that time as well.
A small reminder of the Buena Vista Cemetery remains in
the form of a plaque near the entrance of the restaurant, donated by the
Oceanside Historical Society. Part of it reads, "Dedicated to the
memories of those who were buried at Buena Vista Cemetery. While some
bodies were moved before and during construction on this site many
remain here or nearby." The names of the people found on gravestones are
listed on the plaque.
Scientists Create Artificial Jellyfish
Young moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), which are usually between 10 and 12 cm wide, swim rhythmically. First, they flex their muscles quickly and all at once, expelling water as they take on a dome shape. Then, slowly, their body relaxes and flattens, triggering another round of muscle contractions. Researchers knew which cells helped jellyfish move, and how they work together to push and pull water. What they wanted to find out was how best to recreate this behavior using materials available in the lab.
Bioengineers John Dabiri from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, and Kevin Kit Parker from the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University adopted a motto: Copy nature, but not too much. “Some engineers build things out of concrete, copper and steel—we build things out of cells,” says Parker.
The duo and their colleagues stenciled out the ideal jellyfish shape on silicon, a material that would be sturdy but flexible, much like the jellyfish itself. They then coached rat muscle cells to grow in parallel bands on the silicon and encased the cells with a stretchy material called elastomer. To get their artificial jellyfish, or medusoid, swimming, the researchers submerged it in a salty solution and ran an electric current through the water, jump-starting the rat cells. The mimic propelled itself rapidly in the water, swimming as effectively as a real jellyfish, the researchers report online today in Nature Biotechnology.
The team went through a lot of trial and error to get everything right, Parker notes. The silicon layer used to mimic the jellyfish’s body had to be strong but not so strong that the muscle cells could not stiffen it, and the fingerlike lobes of the body had to be adjusted to make sure water could flow in between them. In healthy hearts, valves open wide and close tightly. When they malfunction, there can be serious health repercussions. By studying how jellyfish manipulate liquids with their body, Parker says, scientists may be able to come up with more accurate ways to fix or even replace damaged heart valves.
Joseph Ayers, a neurophysiologist at Northeastern University in Boston who was not involved with the study, is impressed, particularly because the researchers were able to use the energy produced by muscle cells and not batteries to power the medusoids, making them practically independent. “This is very much a landmark paper,” he says. “I think in the long run, its greatest impact is going to be in implantable medical devices.”

Haunted Locations in Old Town San Diego
The Haunted Cosmopolitan Hotel is one of Old Town San Diego's most haunted
locations. This is part 3 of our series on Hauntings & Ghosts of Haunted Old Town San
Diego.
Ghosts of the Haunted Cosmopolitan Hotel
Ghosts of the Haunted Cosmopolitan Hotel
Isadora Bandini room. Once the building was converted to a hotel,
Bandini’s daughter used to go there to remember her childhood days. She
used to stay in the same room at every visit. A lot of people believe
her spirit is still in the room. The ghost likes to open the curtains,
move the position of the mirror and put the bathroom robe on the floor
(this is what guest and hotel staff has experienced). Guest can also
hear a cat purring at night. Paranormal investigators have examined
the room. When they started to get readings and ask questions, they
weren’t getting anything. Then, they realized that Isadora spoke
Spanish when she was alive. They started to ask questions in Spanish
and, at that moment, she told them her name. They also caught the cat
and some Indians who lived in the area way before the adobe house was
constructed.
History of the Haunted Cosmopolitan Hotel
The history of this building goes back to 175 years. It all started
with a pioneer named Juan Lorenzo Bandini. He settled the area in the
1800s. Between 1827 to 1829, he built a magnificent and extended
residence with the idea of proving maximum comfort to his wife and two
daughters. The result ended up being the largest residence in San Diego
at that time. The house was built in a Spanish Colonial style. It
included abode walls, muslin ceilings and brick lane patio.
When Bandini died, a man named Albert Seeley acquired the property.
His dream was to build a place where travelers could rest, eat and get
some entertainment. In order to do that, Seeley added a second level to
the originally adobe structure. He was able to create a hotel with 20
rooms. The new edification was built in a Greek Revival style. Seeley
was able to keep the hotel full because he was also in the
transportation business. He used to run coaches between Los Angeles and
San Diego three times a week.

Tales of restless spirits wandering among the graves &
haunting the local residents houses.
Cars parked in front of the cemetery (on top
of many graves) may suddenly have trouble starting. Unseen hands may set
off a wave of car alarms. Surrounding businesses and homes have
experienced unexplained problems with lighting, electrical power,
appliances and alarm systems.
Native American and Hispanic apparitions have
also been known to appear within the graveyard and in the surrounding
area, sometimes even fooling the living into thinking they are one of
the Old Town employees who dress up in period costumes.
People who leave their cars parked in front of the cemetery (on top of the many graves) often find them hard to start afterwards. Car alarms can often be heard from cars parked here, set off by unseen hands.

People visiting the cemetery report
feeling an icy chill when they walk through some spots.
Some describe the chill as if walking through
a freezing, unknown presence.
In the evenings, what looks like an
Hispanic or Native American can be seen floating just above the ground.
A misty, glowing figure can sometimes
also be seen drifting along the sidewalk, just outside the cemetery wall.
Figures that
are seen here are often mistaken for park employees that dress up in
period costume.
These ghostly figures however,
quickly vanish without a trace, unlike their living counterparts.
A woman in a white Victorian costume
appears, then disappears along the south wall.
Some figures that glide through here
are only partially visible. It is not unusual to hear someone report
seeing only the upper torso of a man or woman.
History of the Haunted El Campo Santo Cemetery
El Campo Santo Cemetery is San Diego's second oldest cemetery, and dates
back to 1849 with the burial of its first resident, Juan Adams. Burials
in this Catholic Cemetery continued through 1880, welcoming San Diego
dead of all different backgrounds, including Yankee Jim Robinson who was
hung at the site of the Whaley House. Located in Old Town, the
residents of El Campo Santo have been repeatedly disturbed as the
growing city moved the graves to make room for the living. In 1889, the
community built a horse-drawn street car line through the cemetery,
right over 18 existing graves. This line eventually became a road, San
Diego Blvd, and, in 1942, was paved and turned into a modern street.
That first street car line was emblematic of the
cemetery’s history. At least thirty graves linger beneath the streets
and sidewalks of San Diego Blvd and Lindwood Street.
In 1933 the San Diego Historical Society
restored El Campo Santo as accurately as possible based on early
photographs and descriptions. Now, the cemetery includes an adobe wall,
reset markets, rebuilt paling enclosures and a plain white cross in the
center of the plot.
Despite the historical society’s goodwill
gesture, many believe the ghosts of El Campo Santo were not appeased.
Our next post will be about San Diego's Haunted Cosmopolitan Hotel!

The Haunted Whaley House
Ghosts of the haunted Whaley house
The earliest documented ghost at the Whaley House is “Yankee Jim”. James (aka Santiago) Robinson was convicted of attempted grand larceny in San Diego in 1852, and hanged on a gallows off the back of a wagon on the site where the house now stands. Although Thomas Whaley had been a spectator at the execution, he did not let it disuade him from buying the property a few years later and building a home for his family there. According to the San Diego Union, “soon after the couple and their children moved in, heavy footsteps were heard moving about the house. Whaley described them as sounding as though they were made by the boots of a large man. Finally he came to the conclusion that these unexplained footfalls were made by Yankee Jim Robinson.”
Many visitors to the house have reported encountering Thomas Whaley himself. The late June Reading, former curator of the museum, said, “We had a little girl perhaps 5 or 6 years old who waved to a man she said was standing in the parlor… We couldn’t see him. But often children’s sensitivity is greater than an adult’s.” However, many adults have reported seeing the apparition of Mr. Whaley, usually on the upper landing. One said he was “clad in frock coat and pantaloons, the face turned away from her, so she could not make it out. Suddenly it faded away.”

Even television personality Regis Philbin
reported seeing Anna Whaley in the house. Anna isn't the only female
visitors see or sense. Some have claimed to sense a small figure woman
in the courtroom. No one has been able to identify this woman but it is
believed she is one of the numerous tenants that the house was rented
to. A long-haired little girl has also been spotted in the house,
particularly in the dining room. According to an urban legend, the
little girl is one of the Whaley children's playmates that broke her
neck on a low-hanging clothesline in the backyard.
Human spirits aren't the only ones seen at the Whaley
House. A parapsychologist reported seeing a spotted dog, perhaps a fox
terrier, run down the hall in the house. The Whaley's owned a terrier
named Dolly Varden.
History of The Haunted Whaley House
In addition to being the Whaley Family home, it housed a granary, the
County Court House, San Diego's first commercial theater, various
businesses including Thomas Whaley's own general store, a ballroom, a
billiard hall, school, and polling place. Significant events, such as
the siezure of the court documents and records in 1871, and the suicide
of Violet Whaley in 1885 profoundly affected Thomas and Anna Whaley.
These events, as well as the hangings which occurred on the property
before the house was constructed, have suffused the Whaley House with an
air of mystery and added to its reputation as something more than just
California State Historic Landmark.

Cancer New Moon (Ghost Hunting Weather Report)
Ghost Hunting Weather Report
The July 18 Cancer New Moon (9:24 p.m. PDT) evokes the nurturing power of the Mother, bestowing her blessings at the same time as the T-square ignites. Cancer’s message is to care for ourselves and others, to trust that the Great Mother is watching over us and we are safe. Cancer fosters the deeper heart-to-heart connection we are collectively moving toward, so gather close family and friends around you at this New Moon.
This is also a good time to contact your ancestors and gain their strength and aid. The ancestors (whether they are related to you by blood or not) are awaiting your call. Cancer corresponds to the Family gua (located in the middle of the left wall as you enter the front door), and is related to stability, financial and emotional security and family or domestic happiness.
It’s another New Moon: when the magically minded make wishes and astrologers attempt to divine this cycle’s intentions. But fates are personal. Even if a new moon chart could be forced to describe them all, no single astrologer could tell that many stories. The wishes you make now may indeed be super-powered, but if you don’t have a strong relationship with the archetypes, don’t expect special favors. If you rarely visited your cookie-baking grandmother, don’t expect her to FedEx goodies to your dorm room. New Moons are potent times to forge alliances with the gods. Visit the invisible world. Bow and open yourself to their touch. Make an offering. Humans have been rendezvousing with these archetypes for thousands of years. When you call out to the gods, they do respond!
Water was Cancer’s first language. As a child, she
babbled like a brook, thundered like a waterfall, and sank deep into
thought like a well. Speaking this way, she learned how to feel all of
her feelings completely. When somebody vulnerable is in danger, her
heart can storm like the ocean. But most days she flows like a cool
mountain stream, soothing harsh edges, blessing the roots, and finding
out everyone’s secrets. She’s the Moon’s own daughter. When Cancer smiles her Moon-face smile, you can’t help but feel loved and safe.
Into summer’s landscape, she carries safety pins, a damp cloth for
soothing brows, colorful band-aids, and a miracle tea that makes you
feel like you’ve enjoyed a peaceful sleep with happy dreams.
Visit Cancer and she’ll watch you like a pot that might
boil over. “Here, you look like you need this,” she’ll say, handing you
something home-baked and delicious. She knows what the birds are
thinking. She can cry at the drop of a hat. Her sensitivity used to make
me wonder about the durability of her blessings. But over time I
learned that she’s nobody’s fool. She has a genuine talent for making
things grow. Just look at her garden! When she sits so calmly next to
you, she’s steady as a mother watching a sleeping infant. She’ll feed
you with quiet spoons of strength, protection, and the knowledge that
wherever you are is your home. If you accept what she offers this cycle,
her blessings can nurture you for months to come.
It’s easy to call in Cancer. Just find a safe place
and come to stillness. Let your weary mind go, as if you were dropping
into a cool bath on a hot summer day. Sink into the good that sustains
you. Cancer is a water sign—its energy is fluid, cleansing, and
receptive. Water sign cycles are particularly sweet for making tender
connections with loved ones. They’re auspicious for spiritual practice
too; whatever you sit with now can be more deeply absorbed. Listen to
your intuition. Follow the intricate paths of your imagination. Commit
to your creativity. Each Moon cycle brings new energy for growth. But what specifically should you grow now? Astrology typically answers “what” questions by looking at houses. Look to the house of your birth chart with Cancer on the cusp: here’s your personal seed bed this month. This is the place where you usually “do” this sign, where the Moon is most at home, and the dance of her phases is most relevant. The New Moon may bring a unique opportunity here… but you must tune in.
Cancer’s Response
Waiting for Cancer to show up is the fun part. No way can I predict it for you. You may get a brilliant new idea for a creative project—or a sudden urge to really clean your house. It’s amazing what clearing and organizing your space can do. It’s like birds building the nest before the eggs appear. Or perhaps you’ll be asked to act as Cancer’s agent. You might bake a cake for a friend who’s in the doldrums. A child or lost cat might need your help. Cancer’s message? Notice how much you receive whenever you selflessly give.

Haunted Knott's Berry Farm
Ghosts of Knott's Berry Farm
Strange noises and eerie feelings have been described by employees of the Peanuts Playhouse in camp snoopy. It has also been reported that lights turn themselves on and off with no one else present. The old Dinosaur Ride (which was in the area now occupied roughly by the Johnny Rockets in Boardwalk) was also said to be haunted by a former maintanance employee and a young boy.
The upstairs of Virginia's Gift Shop on the exterior of the park is said to be haunted as is the Bird Cage Theater and Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant.
The lady that was working in the Teddy Bear store told a story about the building when it was still the old Print Shop (when we were there you could still see the faded word print underneath the word shop on the sign to the Teddy Bear store). Apparantly there were stamps (not the kind you mail) on display on shelves on the wall and for no apparent reason some of them started falling off of the shelves.
Knott's Berry Farm & Calico Ghost Town
Calico Ghost Town came to life in 1881 when the Silver King Mine was claimed, just eight short years later Walter Knott was born in 1889. Both the Town and Walter were born in California in San Bernardino County. When Walter was young he worked for a short time as a carpenter at Calico and his uncle John King was one of the founding partners in the mine that had his name and spurned the birth of Calico.
These memories must have stuck with young Walter because in the 1920’s after he began his Berry Farm and later the Chicken Dinner Restaurant with his wife Cordelia in the City of Buena Park, California, he built a mock ghost town to entertain the guests that came to their Farm and Restaurant. In Walter’s own words, from 1942: “Every time I have the opportunity to get away for a couple of days I like to visit the ghost towns of the west for we are continually seeking materials with which to reconstruct the ghost town here at Knott’s Berry Place. By securing a building here, part of another there, an old bar in one place or something else somewhere else we add to the picture we are attempting to portray – a composite picture of the ghost towns of the west as they appeared in ‘49 and the early ‘50′s. We are not collecting museum pieces nor is it the intention to build a museum. Our thought is to collect a town but as that is impossible we try to do the next best thing – build or reconstruct a ghost town that will be authentic and show life as it was lived in the early days”. This concept was a total success for the Knott’s and by 1950 they had a replica of a typical ghost town in Buena Park. It was at this point that Walter Purchased the entire ghost town of Calico in 1951. Walter then moved some original buildings to Knott’s Berry Farm to add to his already existing ghost town and restored and re-built other buildings at the Calico site. There are still five original buildings still standing at Calico. It was at this time there was much going on simultaneously at Calico and Knott’s, thus there were many similarities between the two places. In 1966 after fully restoring Calico Ghost Town, Walter deeded the whole town to the County of San Bernardino and it became the county regional park that it still is today.
What are these so called similarities between these two places. First let’s look at the use of the name Calico that Walter used at Knott’s after purchasing the town in 1951. Walter used the Calico name for many attractions and areas in Knott’s, some of these names were: The Calico Railroad, The Calico Mine Ride, The Calico Log Ride (on a side note, John Wayne was the first official person to ride this attraction), Calico Square, The Calico Saloon and they also had a scale model of Calico Ghost Town and a mural/painting in Saloon titled, “Saturday Night in Calico”.
A building that stands at both Calico and Knott’s is the Bottle House, this interesting building was not really a Calico remnant and it is doubtful that one ever existed there but Walter had one built at each site because bottle houses were known to exist in the old west.
There was an attraction that graced both places for a number of years, at Knott’s it was called The Haunted Shack and at Calico it is called The Mystery Shack. This attraction was a walk through experience and guests are treated to the optical illusions that characterized these attractions, water runs uphill, small children tower over their older siblings and chairs stand on two legs. The Haunted Shack at Knott’s was removed in 2000 but the Mystery Shack at Calico is still there for all to enjoy.
Knott’s is now owned by a large corporation and It might be sheer coincidence but there is a new connection between the Calico and Knott’s at Halloween. At Knott’s it was called Knott’s Scary Farm Haunt and at Calico it is called The Calico Ghost Haunt. Both places decorate for this holiday and have many special “scary” events in the month of October.
Calico and Knott’s are great haunted places to visit, if you want to see what Knott’s used to be like before it became such a large amusement park, visit Calico and have a great time re-living the old west.
Calico
Ghost Town is one of the most haunted locations in California, with
many types of ghosts & paranormal phenomenon. Calico has Shadow
people, orbs, full bodied apparitions, ghost lights & more.
Quick history
In 1881, three men, Charlie Meacham, Johnny McBride, and Larry Silvia
discovered silver in the Calico Mountains. Miners from all around came
to work the mines. The town of Calico sprang up, and at one time reached
a population of 3,500, not including an additional 1,500 in the greater
Calico Mining District. All the silver from Calico was sent to San Francisco
to make coins. By 1900, the price of silver dropped half of its value,
and most of the silver had been mined out. Miners left to find other
fortunes and the town died.
Ghosts of Calico
One of the most often sighted spirits is that
of Lucy Bell King Lane, a woman who spent nearly seventy years of her life
in Calico. When Lucy was just ten years old, she moved
with her parents, two brothers, and a sister to nearby Bismarck, which
overlooked the town of Calico. To get to school, Lucy would have to slide
down the steep slope in the morning and make the long tiring hike up the
hill afterwards. When she was 18 years old, she married John Robert Lane
and the two opened a general store that provided not only provisions to
the mining population, but also cloth, nails, and hardware. They
prospered briefly but when the silver market began to decline, the
couple left Calico
in 1899. However, the couple returned in 1916,
making their old store their home. Four years later, they moved into
the old courthouse and post office building. Her husband John died in
1934, but Lucy would continue to live a long life, staying in the same
house until she died in 1967 at the age of 93.
Today, their old home
has become a museum, that exhibits the life the Lanes lived, as well
as a collection of mining materials, photographs, and Native American
displays from the times before
Calico's
silver deposits were discovered.
Though Lucy died four
decades ago, she is evidently fond of her old home town as she is
frequently still sighted there. Most often she has been seen walking
between their old store and the home that she lived in until her
death. When she is spied, she is described as wearing a long black
dress, most likely the very lace one that she was buried in. Her
favorite rocking chair has also been said to rock of its own accord
and often pictures are taken off the wall at night, only to found the
next morning in a neat pile on the floor. At Lane’s old store, clerks
have often heard unexplainable noises and catch movement out of the
corners of their eyes, which they also attribute to Lucy. The Lane
house was the longest occupied original structure in
Calico.
But, favorite resident Lucy Lane is not
the only phantom that lurks in
Calico.
At that very same school house sitting atop the hill in
Calico,
a number of people have reported seeing a little girl about 11 or 12
years, most often old smiling through a window. Sometimes she even
leans out and waves at passers by.
Others have allegedly seen phantom school
teachers and another small child who has been known to grab people’s legs
or pinch their ankles. Some visitors have also reported seeing a floating
red light inside the school. Also a shadow person has been seen on the roof of the school house.
Though the hills surrounding
Calico
once held dozens of mines, and the many pits and ruins continue to attest
to this,
Calico
features the Maggie Mine, that once produced some $13 million in
silver ore, and now its tunnels can be explored by visitors. In the
1,000 feet of tunnels that are open to the public, it should come as
no surprise that many believe that spirits lurk within the mine’s
depths.
number of
visitors have reported extreme cold spots throughout the mine and feelings
of "one's hair standing up" in various places, but most particularly where
two miners known as the Mulcahey Brothers made their home in the mine.
Though portions of the mine are blocked off behind grates, macabre
mannequins add to the spooky feeling in the mine.
Near the Maggie’s Mine is
Hank’s Hotel, which once belonged to an angry old cowboy whose spirit
allegedly once punched a man in the leg who was standing on his fence. But
more commonly, people have reported something tugging on their wrists,
hands and clothing along the boardwalk in front of the hotel. These
antics; however, are not generally blamed on the angry cowboy, but rather
on a 4-5 year old child who has been seen roaming the boardwalk and the
surrounding area.
Also said to haunt
Calico's
boardwalks on Main Street is that of its last marshal, Tumbleweed Harris.
A number of visitors have described seeing a big man with a white beard
which fits the description of the man who kept the peace in
Calico
for seven years.
At the
Calico Corral, a number of people have
often heard the voices of crowds and celebration coming from the barn that
once hosted regular Saturday night dances. At Lil’s Saloon, one of
Calico's
original buildings, sounds of an old-style piano and rowdy crowds have
been heard when no one was in the building. Employees have also often
reported hearing the jingle of spurs and other noises that can’t be
explained. Another spectral lady in a long white dress has
frequently been seen walking near the outskirts of the
ghost town and at the building that
once housed the town theater, which is now the R&D Fossils & Minerals
Shop, a another female ghost named Esmeralda,
has allegedly has taken up residence.
Calico had
another famous resident – that of Dorsey, the "mail carrying dog.” Dorsey
was found in 1883 by Postmaster Jim Stacy, when the hungry and footsore
black and white shepherd was lying on his porch. Stacy quickly adopted him
and Dorsey became his faithful friend. In addition to his postmaster
duties, Stacy also had an interest in a mine in nearby Bismarck. On one
occasion, when Stacy needed to get an urgent message to his partner at the
mine, he tied a note to Dorsey’s neck and sent him up there. Before long,
Dorsey returned with a reply. Dorsey was soon carrying messages
back and forth to the mine frequently, when Stacy had the idea to make the dog a
regular mail carrier. Soon, the dog was carrying all the mail from Calico
to Bismarck, bearing his load in little pouches strapped to his back. For
three years, Dorsey covered the mail route between the two camps and
became so valuable that Stacy was offered $500 for the dog, to which Stacy
replied: "I'd rather sell a grandson."
Dorsey's legend was
revived in a 1972 album entitled "The Ballad of Calico” by Kenny Rogers.
The song was called "Dorsey, the Mail Carrying Dog.” And, of course, in
haunted
Calico, he has been revived in another way – the
"spectral dog." On
several occasions, Dorsey has been seen as a shadow-like apparition at the
cemetery and near the Print Shop that stands near the original location of
the post office.
